Shockwave Therapy
How It Works
Shockwave therapy, despite its name, does not involve shocking the patient. Instead it is a treatment that generates a physical force that effectively treats traumatized, chronically irritated and painful soft tissue problems. The machine generates a “shockwave”, much like a mini earthquake or tsunami, that sends a physical force into the effected tissue. If the tissue is healthy, the shockwave simply moves through the tissue like a wave through water, but when it encounters an adhesion in the tissue the shockwave shakes it apart. At the tissue level this introduces little micro-tears like what happens in weight lifting and causes the tissue to repair stronger than before. The healing of the micro-tears also promotes regeneration of blood vessels and bone cells. The breakdown in adhesion in the tissue also promotes improved blood flow that further aids in healing and pain reduction.
Therapy sessions are short, usually 20 – 30 minutes in length, and provide successful relief of chronic pain and restores mobility. Permanent relief typically begins about 72 hours following treatment.
